Trust in the Government is at an All-Time Low

According to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, with Americans’ distrust of government at its highest level ever.

Not only do 89 percent of Americans say they distrust government to do the right thing, but 74 percent say the country is on the wrong track and 84 percent disapprove of Congress — warnings for Democrats and Republicans alike.

According to a poll conducted by the CNN, trust in the Federal Government is at an all-time low:

A CNN/ORC International Poll released Wednesday morning indicates that only 15 percent of Americans say they trust the government in Washington to do what’s right just about always or most of the time. Last September that figure was at 25 percent. Seventy-seven percent of people questioned say they trust the federal government only some of the time, and an additional eight percent volunteer that they never trust the government to do what’s right.

Meanwhile, Australians are expressing a similar distrust in their own federal government, according to a poll conducted by Professor Andrew Markus, chairman of Pratt Foundation in Jewish Civilization at Monash University:

Current trust in the federal government is low. In 2009, 48 per cent of people trusted the federal government to do the right thing for the Australian people ‘almost always’ or ‘most of the time.’ In 2011, this fell to 30 per cent, Asian Correspondent quoted Professor Markus citing the issue of asylum seeker as contributing factor.

“The asylum seeker issue contributes to this decline in trust. There is significant division over the policy that the government should be following.”
